How to Wear Grip Socks With Football Socks and Boots

The Setup: Two Methods

There are two main ways to wear grip socks in football. Which one you use depends on whether you need to match a team kit or are training without a kit requirement.

Method 1: The Cut-Sock Setup (Match Day)

This is the method used by professional footballers and is the most common approach when wearing a team kit.

  1. Put on your grip socks first, pulling them up to mid-calf or just below the knee.
  2. Take your team socks and cut the foot section off, leaving just the shin-pad sleeve (the tube that covers your shin pad).
  3. Pull the team sock sleeve over your grip sock so the team-coloured sock is visible above the boot line.
  4. Tuck the top of the grip sock under the team sock sleeve if needed for a clean finish.
  5. Fit your shin pad as normal and pull the team sleeve up over it.

The result: grip sock doing the work inside the boot, team sock providing the correct appearance above it.

Method 2: Grip Socks Only (Training)

For training or casual play where you don't need to match a team kit:

  1. Pull the grip socks on and up to your preferred height.
  2. Put your boots on as normal.
  3. That's it. No team sock needed.

Getting the Right Fit Inside Your Boot

The grip only works if the sock fits properly. A sock that's too big will bunch at the toe or heel — reducing the grip contact and causing discomfort. A sock that's too small will restrict circulation and feel tight during extended play.

STRIKZ Pro Grip Socks come in Small (UK 3–5), Medium (UK 6–8), and Large (UK 9–11) so you can get the right fit for your foot, not a one-size-fits-most compromise.

Which Boots Work Best With Grip Socks?

Grip socks work with any boot but deliver the most noticeable difference in modern lightweight boots with smooth synthetic linings — which covers most current boots from Nike, Adidas, Puma, and New Balance. These boots have minimal internal padding, meaning your foot has more room to shift without grip socks. Add grip socks and that internal movement is eliminated.
